French street artist JR, known for installing large-scale black-and-white trompe-l’œil in public places, has revealed that his next project will be at the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo. He made the announcement on his official Instagram account with a picture of himself on horseback with the landmark pyramids in the backdrop when he visited the country earlier this year.

“Proud to announce my next project at the Pyramids in October 2021,” he wrote, adding that the artwork “might be a photo collage.” The work is a commission by Art D’Egypte, a platform that’s organizing a major contemporary art exhibition, titled ‘Forever Is Now’ at the site of the pyramids in October, according to The National.

This won’t be the first time that JR has presented his work in the region. In 2011, he brought his ‘Inside Out’ project to the UAE with a photo booth that was installed in Manarat Al Saadiyat, allowing visitors to have their portraits taken and paste them outside the center. JR is known for creating life-sized optical illusions by installing them on landmarks and structures.

Among JR’s most recent creations is trompe-l’œil installation on the façade of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, which houses the Embassy of France and is undergoing a four-year restoration. His mural covers up the scaffolding that has been installed around the perimeter of the building.

Titled Punto di Fuga (Vanishing Point), the work spans across 6,500 sqaure feet, and offers viewers a look into the halls of the palace, which is filled with columns and arches, decorated with classical figures. In June this year, he also revealed the terrain hidden behind the Eiffel Tower with a massive Anamorphic optical illusion.
