As 5 June marks World Environment Day, we thought there’s no better time than now to reinstate the importance of sustainable living. This year, the day is centered around ‘Biodiversity’, as recent events such as forest fires, locust swarms and the ongoing pandemic have highlighted that human beings and our environment are inextricably linked.
On this day, the UAE has pledged to increase the number of protected areas for wildlife and endangered species. To express our support and gratitude towards our country, we present to you five ways in which you could do your part in protecting the environment.
There’s great satisfaction in using ingredients that have been freshly harvested in your own garden. If you’re just starting out, there are low-maintenance plant varieties, such as tomatoes and aubergines, which can be easily grown in a pot. You can also engage your children in growing your own produce, and they’ll greatly enjoy reaping the reward of their own hard work.

As we’ve been following safety regulations and wearing masks and gloves, many of us may not be using proper means of disposal and overlooking how much wastage they can cause. Switch your disposable mask for a reusable and eco-friendly one. These masks are super stylish and will ensure your protection just as much, but without hurting the environment.

Climate change has caused irreparable damage to flora and fauna. By choosing to take a short stroll to your nearby grocery store instead of driving, you’re helping protect the environment against climate change. So, the next time you’re searching for your car keys, opt for a walk instead and enjoy the summer breeze.

As we spend more time at home, it’s safe to say that our water consumption has increased significantly. Conserve water and make sure to turn the tap off in between washing. These small steps can go a long way.

Sustainable eating has become a key aspect of the UAE’s food scene. Organic farming was once a novel concept in the region but it has now become a preferred choice. Try sourcing items from local suppliers. However, even large supermarket chains have a dedicated space for local and organic milk and produce, so look for ingredients that have been marked with the UAE flag sticker the next time you’re at a supermarket.
