Banksy Has Created An Artwork Honoring George Floyd And Here’s Why It Matters

The #BlackLivesMatter movement has propelled people from across the world to stand in solidarity with the black community. As a superb expression of his own anguish over the issue, anonymous British graffiti artist Bansky has created an artwork that pays homage to George Floyd, a person of color whose death at the hands of a police officer has been at the core of the movement and has sparked worldwide protests.

The renowned artist, who keeps his identity a secret, expressed his support for the Black Lives Matter movement. “People of color are being failed by the system… like a broken pipe flooding the apartment of the people living downstairs,” Banksy wrote in an Instagram post, which has fetched itself over two million ‘likes’.

The artwork doesn’t just reference the death of George Floyd, but also reflects the plight of the black community. The dark colorways emphasize his outrage, and the flowers and candle surrounding the faceless portrait are depiction of countless people of color who have met a similar fate but remain unnoticed.
