How To Make Your House Function As A Workspace And Home? Abeer Al Otaiba Offers A Look Inside Her Life

I’m adapting to our new normal like the rest of the world, but I don’t feel isolated as I keep reminding myself that this too shall pass. Each day, we become more and more accustomed to our new normal of being home. I’m doing my part to stay safe and have enjoyed the unexpected extra time with my children, in particular. They’re blissfully happy and innocent in all of this, and I’m loving the extra hugs, funny chats and outdoor walks.

I’ve been setting up a daily schedule for the kids, which allows me to have a productive day where I can pay equal attention to my various responsibilities, and not feel disorganized. And I’d love to share how I structure my day so that our house functions both as a workplace and home.

Exercise

I do kickboxing and the Pilates Reformer, which are my two favorite workouts whether I’m home or at the gym, so I’m thankful to be able to continue practicing at home. It’s the perfect outlet for me to release energy and stay active.

Helping in the time of COVID-19

There have been countless people impacted by COVID-19, so I’ve been trying to find ways to support those in need or on the frontline. These include local hospitals, medical personnel, first responders and organizations committed to feeding children and families, whose food programs have been displaced as a result of schools and work being cancelled.

Workspace Tips

I’m blessed to have been working from home on a regular basis, even before these unprecedented times made it the new normal, so I had already carved out an area where I can design and manage within the comfort of my own home.

Set up your workplace in an area of your home where there’s natural light. It doubles as my zen space and I love the energy it brings; I feel inspired and at peace when I work from there. Decorate it with furniture you’re most comfortable with, and include a few of your favorite things to keep you motivated. The enclosed terrace just outside my master bedroom includes oversized lounge chairs, a large sketching desk and my Pilates reformer.

These are strange and uncertain times that we’re all trying to navigate, but my hope for all of us is to use this time for introspection, to seek and nurture relationships and habits that try to impact a positive change within us, and even project them onto the physical spaces we occupy and create.
