The New York Fashion Week has wrapped up another dynamic runway presentation this year, and we noticed some definitive style shifts that may indicate what’s next in fashion. From distorted proportions, novel layering choices, and vintage inspirations, the runway looked to the future with recognisable styles still finding their space.

Here are some exciting trend shifts we loved on the runway.

The waist is cinched, but think beyond tailoring

On the runway, the familiar waist cinch brings silhouettes into focus; however, brands are thinking beyond structural tailoring. Chunky statement belts, flowy waist knots, and cummerbunds bring renewed focus to the cinched waist. Along with bringing shape, they add layers to the garment, as well as allow personal style integrations.

The fabrics are flowing

Even as styles are defined by structured cinches and geometry, the fabrics are not contained on the runway. Flowing silk, chiffon, and delicate ruffles bring movement to the garment, leaning into a softer yet liberating feel. 

Its fringes everywhere

Bringing an added dimension to otherwise familiar silhouettes, fringes are most definitely part of the upcoming style shifts. Seen across skirts, tops, and even accessories, they bring movement, drama, and fun to any look, and the runway was generous with its fringe incorporations.

Colours are loud 

Gone are days when high fashion was defined by muted colours and quiet beiges. For the season ahead, brands are going loud with colours. Think neon pink, bright orange, moss green, and sunflower yellow. On the runway, colours were not mere accents, but they directed the collections’ visual story. 

Feminine is back

The New York Fashion Week runway was unapologetically feminine in its design approach. Drawing inspirations from the 80s printed textures and 90s chic, fashion is not shying away from feminine silhouettes for the upcoming season. 

Exaggerated Drop-Waists

The runway is not confining designs to familiar body proportions, redefining body lines and shifting focus. Through belts worn low, drop-waist voluminous skirts, and long-line tops, the visual focus shifts to more novel and avant-garde proportions. 

The New York Fashion Week brought the quintessential fun it is known for while redefining many familiar conventions and adding new fashion perspectives. As the focus now shifts to the London Fashion Week starting tomorrow, we have our notes secured from the New York runways.
