Here’s another laurel for Saudi Arabia. Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al Mansour’s film The Perfect Candidate is the first Saudi Oscar submission in decades. Haifaa has earned her spurs as the first female Saudi feature film director.

The Perfect Candidate is the first film to be supported by the Saudi Film Council, and will be in the running for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ title at the 92nd Academy Awards. As the Kingdom positions itself as a bastion of culture, the film’s submission at the Oscars shows great promise.
