How to spend a day living like a local in Berlin

Berlin – a city of grit and grandeur. A place where centuries-old architecture rubs shoulders with edgy street art, and history isn’t just taught but felt. With just 24 hours to capture its magic, the plan is set. Explore the German capital’s iconic landmarks, secret hideaways, and vibrant neighbourhoods. Here’s a full day’s itinerary, including culture, food, and local gems that will allow you to experience Berlin’s raw, unapologetic charm.

8:30am

Waking up at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski, right next to the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin’s history is at your doorstep. As Germans start the day at sunrise, it is best to enjoy the early morning at Tiergarten park. To get there, pass under the tall columns of the Brandenburg Gate, leading to the Reichstag. The building, a marvel of neoclassical and modern architecture, is a beautiful sight for waking eyes. Nestled beside a tranquil lake in the park, the Café am Neuen See is a local favourite for a sip of morning coffee.

10:00am

Continuing along Unter Den Linden, the Museum Island awaits. Bode Museum reveals impressive collections of Byzantine art and sculptures, presenting historical and artistic richness alongside serene views over the Spree River.

11:30am

Hackescher Markt, known for its lively courtyards and bohemian spirit, is just a few steps north from the museum. Brimming with street art, the Cinema Café Hinterhof sports a relaxed, eclectic vibe, and is beloved by Berliners. The streets all over the area are dotted with one-of-a-kind shops, like the unique H&M luxury concept store, Humana. Don’t miss checking out the finely curated bookshop Do you Read Me?, a favourite stop for those seeking rare finds and literary inspiration.

13:30pm

When it’s time to refuel, Father Carpenter offers the perfect lunch options. Hidden in one of the courtyards of the neighbourhood, it’s a real if-you-know-you-know spot. Locals swear by their pulled beef toast and perfectly cooked poached eggs.

15:30pm

Mamecha is a hidden-gem for a refreshing post-lunch matcha ice cream. Taking it on the go enables a digestive walk to the next stop – Gendarmenmarkt and the French Dome. Street musicians often set up here, adding a lively soundtrack to the stunning architecture – a grand square framed by the twin neoclassical domes of the German and French churches, standing like mirror images of each other.

17:00pm

Make your way over to Charlottenburg and the bourgeois essence of the neighbourhood is clear immediately. Strolling along Ku’damm, Berlin’s luxury shopping boulevard, brings one past high-end boutiques and grand department stores like KaDeWe. A stop at Daluma is a must-do for a quick coffee. Descending the promenade further, the old cinemas and brick mansions pave the path towards the Literaturhaus on Fasanenstraße, a favourite spot for Berlin’s literary crowd and one that seems straight out of a romance novel.

20:00pm

As the city lights up, the Monkey Bar provides a delicious menu for all tastes. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer some of the most breathtaking views of Berlin’s skyline and the zoo below.

21:00pm

The evening unfolds at Friedrichstadt-Palast, an iconic landmark of former East Germany known for its dazzling shows. Tonight’s performance, Falling in Love, is a breathtaking spectacle featuring costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier. The grand stage, remarkable choreography, and vibrant energy of the show capture Berlin’s flair for the arts in a truly memorable way.

23:30pm

Returning to the hotel, the memories of Berlin’s culture, history, and hidden gems linger. A day well spent in the heart of a city brimming with character and unforgettable sights.
