Emirati filmmaker Sheikha Alyazia bint Nahyan’s new short film Athel has been recognized worldwide and bagged two awards, along with a handful of accreditation badges.

The film tells the story of a TV presenter, Salma (played by renowned Egyptian actress Hala Shiha), who is sent to a surrealist landscape after a sandstorm disrupts her shoot of a poetry show about the pre-Islamic poet Tarafa. The short film premiered on 31 August in the UAE at the Nation Towers in Abu Dhabi. It was produced by Toaster Productions and Anasy Media.

Tying in with Sheikha Alyazia’s love for culture and history, two commonly seen themes in most of her works, the movie has also received the Outstanding Achievement Certificate at the Berlin Flash Film Festival and was officially selected at five international festivals, including the Madrid International Film Festival in Spain. The film also received an award and nomination at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival and festivals in Vienna and Amsterdam.
