Five minutes with DJ Shef Codes

Having moved to Dubai 29 years ago, Rezmal Shefan Lantra (known by his stage name Shef Codes) is one of the city’s most successful DJs. His career, which has spanned the last 20 years, has seen him perform at some of the biggest events in the region, including Untold Dubai and the Yasalam After-Race Concerts with Chris Brown.

In addition to spinning tracks, Shef  is a content creator with a passion for sneakers which he shares with his followers. Villa 88 Man spends five minutes with the artist…

Where did your love for music stem from?

Since I was a child, music has always played a significant role at my family gatherings. My uncle would be the one to choose the music and I think that’s when I first became intrigued by it.

Who or what inspires you?

Lately, it’s been having conversations with interesting people. When I get an idea for a mix or content, I jot it down in my notes and then expand on it later.

What is your favourite genre of music to listen to?

I love all types of music, but for me, there’s a special place in my heart for R&B and Soul.

My favourite album of all time is…

That would be good Kid, mAAd city by Kendrick Lamar.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Nothing special, but for some reason, there’s always a need to have a Red Bull before I DJ.

What would you say is the best place you’ve performed?

I’ve been blessed to play at the biggest clubs and festivals in the region, but there’s something about playing at the 25hours Hotel One Central. There’s always an intimate crowd that understands me and the music I play.

Can you describe the moment you knew you wanted to be a DJ?

It all started while I was watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and I discovered that Jazzy Jeff was a real DJ. This sparked my interest in DJing and turntablism. I immersed myself in it and eventually decided to pursue it as a career.

What are three luxury items you couldn’t live without?

My Louis Vuitton coin purse that I bought in 2011, my vintage Cartier Tank, and the Santal 33 fragrance.

What advice would you give your younger self?

There’s two things I would tell myself. The first is, never get
too comfortable. And the second is that you should invest your money wisely.

The best sneaker release of all time was…

The Solar Nike Air Yeezy 2’s.
