Exclusive: Hashi Founder Hamda Al Mansoori Talks Art, Inspiration And Pride For Her Country

How did you begin your journey into jewellery making?

It all started with an admiration of the beauty of sparkling diamonds and the various colours of gemstones. I believe that each gemstone has its own representation and meaning. I also love how each jewel brings out the personality of the wearer.

Why is jewellery important to you?

A great piece of jewellery is a woman’s best friend. It brings out my creative aspect whenever I design a piece. It affects me and makes my artistic side feel more alive than ever.

Where does the name come from?

HASHI derives from a Japanese word which means ‘Bridge’. The most important aspect of the brand is that we want to become a bridge that connects people – a bridge that helps dreamers reach and achieve their aspirations.

Is there a collection that you hold closest to your heart?

I love my high-end and bespoke pieces because, when I design them, I feel that the sky is my limit. It opens up my creativity without any limitations. Bespoke pieces gives us space to be creative and use bigger stones – for the fine or daily jewellery pieces, you could not use such stones.

Can you tell us about your latest collection?

The latest collection is the Men’s collection using kangaroo leather from Tuscany, Italy. Some of the pieces from it have also been elevated by matching them with platinum and diamonds.

You have just designed a bespoke pageant crown – how did the collaboration come about?

The crown is a collaboration with one of top model management agencies in the world, Dazura. They are a premium modelling and talent management agency who have been in the market for more than 25 years. They organise fashion shows and pageants, represent brands and manage elite international models and supermodels. The crown has been designed for the winner of ‘The Beauty of Russia’, a beauty pageant. The previous edition was held in Sochi past November.

Can you describe the crown – what stones did you use and why?

The ‘Crown of the Beauty of Russia’ is inspired by elements from the UAE and Russia. It has been crafted with white gold and studded with brilliant-cut diamonds, dazzling moissanites, London blue topazes, light blue topazes and freshwater pearls. The blue colour signifies noble birth and signifies aristocracy, while the freshwater pearls represent the authentic traditional jewellery of the UAE. It is a wonderful fusion of both diverse cultures – this beautiful crown unifies both of them seamlessly. This also implies that the UAE is no less than any other place in terms of its creativity and artistic expression. It is an honour for us to leave an imprint like this on the global stage.

Your designs are incredibly intricate and often colourful – how do you suggest one should wear them?

Here at HASHI design house, we always look at jewellery as pieces to complete your look at all events you go to. Yes, you can stack them in a beautiful way, but to style them well, it is important to mix the pieces according to the couture you choose. My advice would be to always try and maintain a chic look with your ensemble.

How important is the UAE in terms of inspiration in your line of work?

I relate everything that I do to the vision of our Rulers: HH the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. My country has taught me that nothing is impossible and that I can start from scratch. I admire how our Rulers have led the UAE into greatness from the beginning until today.

Last December, the UAE celebrated the ‘Year of the 50th’ – what does this mean to you?

It is a celebration of life – of everyone who has put their efforts and sacrifices to help this nation, the UAE, reached of what it has become today. Thus, this will be the sincerest time to thank and to remember everyone for what they have contributed.

Do you have a favourite stone to work with?

I love to work with diamonds and gemstones, because these stones embody a person’s emotional and physical interests – especially those that have impacted one’s life. However, the one stone I really admire above all of them is the Paraiba tourmaline.
