Catherine Martin is reimaging the past with Miu Miu’s new upcycled collection

Miu Miu has released its latest Upcycled collection, this time led by four-time Academy Award-winning designer Catherine Martin.

Best known for her film costume and set design, Catherine Martin has also stepped behind the camera for the first time to direct Grande Envie, a short film that was released alongside the clothing collection.

Launched in 2020, Miu Miu Upcycled was set up to breathe new life into pre-loved garments through a modern lens. For this most recent collection, Catherine’s vision was drawn from the French Riviera in the 1920s and ’30s, which was a moment in history charged with artistic freedom. “It draws together things that don’t necessarily belong,” she explains. Adding as a point of explanation, “Denim with eveningwear, soft tailoring with the hard.”

The film stars Daisy Ridley, Diana Silvers, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Willem Dafoe and unfolds in a sun-drenched château. The campaign, shot by Michella Bredahl, captures the models and actors as they float through decadent stairwells and overgrown gardens, echoing the mood of the clothes: nostalgic and strangely timeless.

Tailored from vintage finds, you’ll see T-shirts that have become bias-cut gowns, accessories that nod to all things nautical and halter tops made of vintage scarves.

Romantic and sustainable, Miu Miu Upcycled by Catherine Martin debuts exclusively at the New Bond Street store in London on June 7, before launching globally on June 21.
