An overnight escape at Hôtel Royal Evian punucated by friendship

Sometimes, the best getaways feel like a homecoming – a chance to slow down and celebrate life’s milestones with those closest to you. My recent staycation at the Hôtel Royal Evian was exactly that, as I shared the exciting news of my early pregnancy with a dear friend who had no idea what surprise was in store for her. An overnight escape at this beautiful property provided the perfect opportunity for us to share personal news and indulge in long, heartfelt conversations about our futures. It was the ultimate girls’ night, allowing us to dream, reflect, and celebrate, all while being pampered in an atmosphere of utter luxury.

The Hôtel Royal, one of the crown jewels of the Evian Resort, overlooking the shimmering shores of Lake Geneva, offers an unrivalled experience of elegance and natural beauty. Our journey to the hotel was as picturesque as the destination, winding through the lush hills of Evian-les-Bains and leading us to the expansive grounds, home to the very source of the world-famous Evian mineral water – yes, right on the property.

From the moment we arrived, the grandeur of the Hôtel Royal was unmistakable. Its Belle Époque architecture and intricate ceiling frescos are a testament to its storied past. Originally built with King Edward VII of the United Kingdom in mind, this historic hotel has been a retreat for travellers seeking relaxation since 1909. Its guest book includes historical figures like the Sultan of Zanzibar, the Maharaja of Kapurthala, Queen Amélie of Portugal, and cultural icons like Greta Garbo. Of course, we were charmed to add our names to this illustrious list.

While its rich heritage is evident, the hotel has been thoughtfully updated. Its interiors blend classic elegance with modern comfort, and the spacious rooms offer unique views of Lake Geneva and the mountains. On the top floor, newly renovated suites can connect to create a spacious and luxurious area with stunning views. Ideal for families or groups of friends, these suites provide privacy and comfort, complete with a private-access elevator.

For those wondering where we spend most of our leisure time, look no further than the resort’s award-winning spa. We descended discreetly in a dedicated elevator, wearing our plush hotel robes and slippers and eagerly anticipated the indulgence and relaxation that awaited us. The spa features an indoor serenity pool, sauna, hammam, cold plunge, and even a snow cave – a first for me. These impressive yet intimate facilities provided a variety of temperatures and experiences to satisfy our every whim.

As expected, the Evian Spa, inspired by the purity of the region’s waters, offers treatments designed to rejuvenate both body and soul, with a newly expanded area for water-based therapies and a specialised zone for hair care. If that isn’t enough, guests can also enjoy modern fitness facilities or take a refreshing dip in the outdoor infinity pool overlooking the lake, which adds to the sense of peace and calm. Suffice to say, we underestimated just how much time we’d need to truly enjoy the spa, but actively did our best to try it all.

Beyond the spa – which I’ll definitely be returning to –the Evian Resort has its very own sports and cultural centre, offering a range of outdoor adventures that really caught my attention. Again, noted for next time. From skiing and hiking to boating and mountain climbing, there’s something for everyone. And thanks to their in-house, professional guides leading the excursions, one can feel safe exploring the breathtaking alpine region. For those who enjoy golf, the Resort’s world-class course – the perennial host of one of the LPGA’s major championships – promises a challenging yet beautiful day on the greens.

While that weekend was just for us, families will find the Hôtel Royal to be an ideal destination as well. The property features a 1,000 sqm dedicated kid’s resort area, surrounded by nature and providing supervised activities planned for any age, from four months to 17 years, so younger guests are entertained throughout the day while parents enjoy their own time. Speaking of family members, the property is also pet-friendly, offering superior services for furry companions.

After a day of lounging by the pool and soaking in the breathtaking views, we returned to our room to get ready for a pampered summer evening at the Veranda restaurant. The culinary experiences at Hôtel Royal are nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing fresh, local ingredients that truly allow guests to savour the region’s rich flavours. I will definitely be booking in advance before my next visit so I can also experience the hotel’s famed Michelin-starred Les Fresques restaurant as well.

At the Veranda, the restaurant staff, reflecting the resort’s impeccable five-star service, made us feel right at home. As I was still early in my pregnancy and adjusting to new dietary needs, they went above and beyond to ensure I could enjoy their finest dishes without worry. After our impeccable meal, I savoured each bite of my custom-made dessert, we reflected on our futures, inspired each other, and I personally came to appreciate even more the impact of a deep friendship between two women.
