Interview by Milo Radonjić

You’ve long been a prominent voice in shaping the contemporary art and design scene of the UAE. How has the country influenced your artistic identity over the years?
The UAE has deeply shaped my artistic vision. It has inspired many of my collections, my photography, and the way I approach storytelling through design. Living here pushed me to think bigger, create differently, and constantly evolve.
You often speak about a sense of belonging within the UAE. What does “belonging” mean to you personally and artistically?
Belonging is more than simply calling a place home. It is about truly becoming part of its society, its mindset, its ambition, and its drive. The UAE has created an environment that inspires people to grow, not only creatively, but also personally. As expats, many of us naturally adopted that energy and vision, striving to become better versions of ourselves. It is an inspiring place that pushes you not only to create, but also to evolve as a person and as a human being.
How important is it for you to preserve or reinterpret Arabic calligraphy for new generations, especially in a country as young and dynamic as the UAE? How does living here continually shape the way you see, feel, and create?
It is very important to me to preserve and reinterpret Arabic calligraphy in a contemporary way. I want younger generations to feel pride in the language and see that our heritage can continue evolving while staying relevant and inspiring.
Living in the UAE continues to shape the way I think and create. It is a place driven by ambition and possibility, and that energy constantly inspires me to evolve both personally and artistically.

Your calligraphy for the Villa 88 Travel cover beautifully weaves together the names of all seven Emirates. What inspired this concept, and what story did you want the artwork to tell?
What inspires me most about the UAE is its ability to bring people together. Not only the seven Emirates themselves, but everyone who has built a life here becomes part of its story and evolution. Through the calligraphy, I wanted to reflect that unity. The names of the Emirates are rooted into the land almost like one connected structure, symbolizing belonging, identity, and shared growth.
When you were creating this particular piece, how did you approach translating the spirit of the Emirates into calligraphic form?
I wanted the piece to feel connected to the land and roots of the UAE. The names of the Emirates flow together organically while each still keeps its own identity. That balance between unity and individuality reflects the spirit of the country itself.
What is beautiful about the UAE is that each Emirate has its own identity while still feeling connected as one. Dubai feels dynamic and ambitious, Abu Dhabi calm and elegant, Sharjah deeply cultural, while the northern Emirates carry a strong connection to nature, authenticity, and simplicity.
The UAE’s art scene has evolved rapidly. As someone who has been part of this journey, what changes make you proudest?
What makes me proudest is seeing the UAE become a global cultural destination. The galleries, artists, museums, and institutions here have proven that the region has a powerful creative voice and something meaningful to contribute internationally.

You have a deep connection with Dubai. What places in the Emirate ground you, inspire you, or spark creativity?
Dubai inspires me because of its contrast between old and new. Its older neighborhoods, its energy, and its constant evolution all spark creativity and push me to look at things differently.
Abu Dhabi has a distinct cultural rhythm. What is your favorite spot there, and why does it resonate with you?
I love the calmness of Abu Dhabi. Spending time at the Louvre Abu Dhabi is always inspiring because it allows you to slow down, observe beauty, and reconnect with creativity.
Sharjah is often described as the cultural heart of the UAE. What spaces or experiences in Sharjah inspire you most?
Sharjah has always been deeply connected to art and culture. Visiting the Sharjah Biennial and the Sharjah Art Foundation is always inspiring because they create meaningful artistic dialogue and discovery.
Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain each carry their own charm. Can you share a favorite memory or location from each?
Ras Al Khaimah inspires me through its mountains and landscapes, Fujairah through its peaceful connection between sea and mountains, and Umm Al Quwain through its quiet authenticity and simplicity.
How would you describe UAE in one sentence?
The UAE is a dream come true, makes me proud.
