In a film directed by Italian artist Floria Sigismondi, Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele pays tribute to some of the brand’s past iconic designs in a new collection titled Aria. The Autumn-Winter 2021 ready-to-wear collection celebrates the luxury brand’s 100th anniversary with Balenciaga ‘hacking’ its creations.
Drawing inspiration from different points in time, the pieces featured in the collection are a tribute to the Italian brand’s history. “In my work, I caress the roots of the past to create unexpected inflorescences, carving the matter through grafting and pruning. I appeal to such ability to reinhabit what has already been given… In this sense, Gucci becomes for me a hacking lab, made of incursions and metamorphoses,” he said in a statement.
The collection features horse-riding helmets imprinted with the words ‘Savoy Club’, which refers to the Savoy Hotel in London, where the founder Guccio Gucci once worked in his youth. It also comprises sequins, statement jewelry, crystalized clutches and bold designs.
Bringing to the fore Balenciaga’s innovative designs and unusual silhouettes, Michele was able to bring out the best of both worlds through this ‘hacking lab’.
