The Importance of SPF as the Weather Heats Up

How and when to apply and the products to invest in

As temperatures rise across the Middle East, the shift in season brings a renewed focus on one of the most essential steps in any beauty routine: sun protection. In a region where sunlight is both constant and intense, SPF should not be just a summer addition, but a year-round necessity that becomes even more important as the temperatures rise.

SPF plays a crucial role in protecting the skin from UV damage, helping to prevent premature ageing, pigmentation and longer-term concerns such as skin cancer. Yet despite its importance, it is often overlooked or applied inconsistently. As we move into the hotter months, incorporating SPF into your daily routine becomes less about intention and more about consistency.

When choosing a product, broad-spectrum protection is key, ensuring coverage against both UVA and UVB rays. In the Middle East climate, SPF 30 should be considered a minimum, with SPF 50 offering more reliable protection for extended exposure. Texture also matters. Lightweight, breathable formulas such as gels, fluids or water-based creams tend to work best in heat and humidity, offering protection without feeling heavy on the skin.

For those who prefer a more streamlined routine, tinted moisturisers, foundations and powders with SPF can offer a practical alternative. They provide a level of protection while evening out the complexion, making them an easy option for those who may not want to layer a traditional sunscreen. However, it’s worth noting that they typically offer lighter sun protection, so for extended time outdoors, a dedicated SPF remains essential.

Layering still plays an important role. Applying sunscreen as the final step in your skincare routine, followed by makeup, ensures a more complete level of protection. For reapplication throughout the day, especially in warmer weather, SPF mists, sticks and powders offer a convenient way to maintain coverage without disrupting makeup.

Timing is just as important as application. SPF should be applied every morning, even when spending most of the day indoors, as UVA rays can penetrate through glass. When outdoors, reapplication every two hours is key, particularly in high heat. Often-overlooked areas such as the neck, ears, hands, and décolletage should also be included.

As the season shifts, make sure you get ahead with your SPF, making it part of your everyday routine.
