Sotheby’s has unveiled a mysterious collection dedicated to fashion icon Martin Margiela, who is known to be fashion’s most discreet designer. The auction, which opens on 19 September, will house nearly 220 pieces that have been brought together over more than 20 years by a private collector.

The idea is to pay homage to one of the most atypical couturiers the world has seen, one who has kept away from the media eye. From his oversized pieces to doll’s clothing adapted to human size, from pieces he painted himself to those created using vintage clothing and found objects, the auction will house this and much more.
