Lujaina Darwish makes history as the first woman to run for the Oman Aquatics Association presidency

Lujaina Mohsin Darwish has built an inspiring career, transitioning from a lecturer to a highly accomplished businesswoman, an elected member of the Consultative Council, and the first Arab woman to lead a football club. Her unwavering ambition continues to break barriers, as she now makes history once again as the first woman to run for the Oman Aquatics Federation presidency.

As the Oman Aquatics Association’s (OAA) Election Committee has officially closed the nomination process for the upcoming 2024-2028 election term, set to take place on March 26, Lujaina is one of three candidates advancing to the final phase of the elections. Her candidacy marks a historic milestone for Oman, as no woman has ever led the association before.

Lujaina Mohsin Darwish is a successful businesswoman who holds a degree in English Literature from Sultan Qaboos University. She has made a significant impact in her field, breaking barriers and achieving remarkable milestones. In 2003, she became the first woman to preside over a sports club in Oman and the GCC when she was appointed President of Ahli Sidab Club. She has also served as a board member of the Oman Football Association (OFA) and the Oman Olympic Committee, further cementing her reputation as a key figure in Omani sports administration.

Lujaina Mohsin Darwish highlighted that her candidacy reflects the remarkable progress Omani women have achieved across various fields. She stated, “If elected, I will work closely with my team to develop aquatic sports at all levels in the coming years.”

She continued, “My focus will be on several key areas, including enhancing youth development programmes to nurture future talent for clubs and national teams, introducing dedicated competitions for women to encourage greater female participation in aquatic sports, and establishing a national women’s swimming team built on a solid foundation with a strong talent pipeline. Additionally, I aim to create pathways for Omani women in swimming, enabling them to compete at both national and international levels.”
