The Al Sadu Society has announced that Kuwait has been designated a “World Crafts City” for Sadu weaving by the World Crafts Council (WCC). This prestigious recognition underscores Kuwait’s dedication to preserving and promoting the traditional art of Sadu weaving while honouring the artisans who continue to keep its rich legacy alive.
The recognition was officially announced by Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al Sabah, Chairperson of the Al Sadu Society, in a statement to KUNA.
The nomination followed an official visit by a WCC delegation to assess Kuwait’s commitment to preserving the craft. The delegation toured Sadu House and other cultural centres across the country to gain insight into the work and efforts of Sadu weavers.
Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al Sabah, renowned for her contributions to empowering Kuwait’s cultural and business sectors, stated: “Sadu is an integral part of Kuwait’s heritage, with its geometric patterns and vibrant colours reflecting the nation’s history and culture.” She added, “Sadu played a significant role in the lives of the Bedouins, used in tents, furniture, and accessories throughout the ages.”
In 2020, UNESCO inscribed the traditional weaving of Al Sadu from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
The World Crafts Council (WCC) is a non-profit organisation founded in New York in 1964, with its headquarters currently based in Kuwait for the duration of the current presidency term.
