Everything You Need To Know About The Clean Beauty Movement

The COVID-19 pandemic has renewed interest in clean beauty and wellness around the world. As more and more consumers pivot towards ethical brands, we put together everything you need to know about the clean beauty movement and share why you should be a part of it too.

Clean beauty is exactly what it says it is – clean and free of ingredients that are suspected to be harmful to health. While it’s hard to accept that conventional beauty companies include endrocrine disruptors like parabens and phthalates in their products, these practices are common and legal in the beauty industry.

The routine use of such products is concerning, which is why switching to healthier alternatives is necessary.  Interestingly, the clean beauty movement isn’t new to the UAE. With a fair share of clean beauty products available in the country, we’ve shortlisted a selection of five cruelty-free and ethically-sourced self-care products you can incorporate into your regime. Treat yourself with some kindness this summer.

Renowned hairstylist and colorist Fabian Lliguin was visiting the Amazon forest as an environmentalist when he came across the indigenous tribeswomen, all of whom had long and lustrous hair. The secret of their beauty was rahua oil, which they had been using to nourish their hair and skin.

This confluence of events led to the birth of Rahua, made with organic, natural, pure plant derived ingredients. It’s vegan, non-toxic and free of parabens, silicone, sulfate and gluten, with all ingredients  grown wild and processed by hand. The brand also uses PET packaging that is 100% recyclable to reduce their carbon footprint. Their products can be purchased on Hoiisa, Ounass and Harvey Nichols Dubai.

Made in Turkey and founded by Egyptian pharmacist and herbalist Dr Nader Sheasha, Dubai-based beauty store Ixora is a COSMOS-certified organic brand that focuses on using ingredients with the highest quality and maximum concentration of organic botanical extracts. This has resulted in luxury products that are natural and effective.

The brand also employs cruelty-free methods to bring products that are ethically produced and free from harmful or controversial ingredients. From over 40 variations of handcrafted soaps and fragrances, face creams and lip balms, Ixora has a large collection of products suited for various skin types. The products can be purchased on their website or directly from their store at Dubai Festival City Mall.

Grown Alchemist

Australian brand Grrown Alchemist uses 100% natural ingredients in all its skincare products. They have a holistic and scientific approach to skincare with the use of organic ingredients that are certified by internationally recognized Australian Certified Organic (ACO). Their premium products include face creams, shampoo and moisturizers, among others, which appeal to both women and men.

Apart from being a clean beauty brand that’s on the forefront of anti-ageing technology, the brand’s sleek packaging made from glass and hardened PET plastic ensures the products remain as fresh as the day they were created. Their products are available online at Bloomingdale’s Dubai and Hoiisa and in-store at Harvey Nichols Dubai.

Teaology stays true to its name – with products that are formulated from the benefits and goodness of high quality teas. The ethical and sustainable all-natural skincare brand from Italy has a range of products, including cleansers, body creams, face masks, scrubs and serums.

Each of their unique products offers a blend of flavonoids from white, black, oolong, green and matcha teas. Their wide range of products can be purchased online at Nissnass, Amazon AE and Boutiqaat.

Hand-poured soy wax candles from Melbourne, Australia, Maisey Candles is a brand with a rich history of four generations of women who love all-things clean and beautiful. Founder Sarah Morrison continued the tradition of candlemaking started by her great grandmother by establishing Maisey Candles to bring  warmth to every home with her favorite line of scents.

The candles  are poured directly by hand and are non-toxic and non-carcinogenic in nature. Every candle is individualistic with its unique raw natural ingredients and varying fragrances. The brand’s products can be purchased online at Hoiisa and Aspire Beauty.
