For over two decades, Chopard has designed the awards presented at the Cannes Film Festival. And among the accolades, the Palme d’Or reigns supreme. This exquisite trophy, crafted from Fairmined-certified ethical gold, is bestowed upon the film selected by the jury. Its intricate design embodies themes of fertility, innovation, and the dedication inherent in the filmmaking process.
The partnership between Chopard and the Cannes Film Festival began in 1997 with a serendipitous encounter between Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director, and Pierre Viot, then President of the Festival. Caroline’s vision for the Palme d’Or involved a lighter design, enhancing its depth and relief. The iconic 19 leaves were intricately detailed, and the stem received the addition of a heart (which is a cherished Chopard motif).
For the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to commence on May 14, the Palme d’Or has undergone a makeover. While retaining its signature branch design, it is presented upon a unique rock crystal base featuring inclusions. This base resembles an emerald-cut diamond, adding a touch of contemporary sophistication to the award’s timeless form.
A single jeweller oversees the work of six skilled artisans, ensuring consistency throughout the 70-hour process. Each stage, from the initial preparation of the mould using the “lost-wax casting” technique to the fiery fusion of the metal in the furnace, requires exceptional dexterity. The meticulous cleaning, polishing, and final assembly showcase the expert craftsmanship inherent in Chopard’s creations.
The resulting Palme d’Or is more than just a trophy; it’s a fusion of form and function. It transcends the mundane, becoming a symbol of unparalleled distinction that celebrates cinema’s enduring magic. With acclaimed American filmmaker Greta Gerwig, presiding over the jury, the 77th Cannes Film Festival promises to be a dazzling display of cinematic brilliance, complemented by the exquisite artistry of the Chopard-crafted Palme d’Or.
