Emirati Mountaineer Fatima Al Awadhi Sets Her Sights on the Seven Summits

As she sets her sights on Lenin Peak, 18-year-old Fatima Al Awadhi continues her remarkable quest to become one of the region’s most accomplished mountaineers.

At just 18 years old, Emirati mountaineer Fatima Al Awadhi is already making history. Having become the youngest Arab to summit Mount Vinson in Antarctica and Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, as well as the youngest Emirati to conquer Mount Elbrus in Europe, she has now embarked on her next challenge: climbing Lenin Peak as part of her ambitious quest to complete the legendary Seven Summits.

Rising 7,134 metres above sea level in the Pamir Mountains of Kyrgyzstan, Lenin Peak will be Fatima’s highest ascent to date. The expedition marks another significant milestone in her journey towards completing the Explorer’s Grand Slam, one of the world’s most demanding adventure achievements, which combines climbing the highest mountain on each continent with skiing to both the North and South Poles.

Fatima’s mountaineering journey began during one of the most difficult periods of her life while she was still in high school. After her father fell into a coma, she joined the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme to help navigate her grief. A trek through Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley introduced her to the mountains, where, sitting beside a campfire in the Himalayas, she set herself an extraordinary goal: to complete the Seven Summits before turning 20.

Since then, her progress has been remarkable. Beginning with Mount Kilimanjaro, she went on to conquer Mount Elbrus before making history on both Vinson Massif and Carstensz Pyramid. Now, just one year after her first true mountaineering expedition above 5,000 metres, she is preparing to tackle a formidable 7,000-metre peak.

Equally impressive is how she balances these expeditions with everyday life. Alongside months of physical training, technical preparation and international travel, Fatima is studying Economics at university full time, managing her academic commitments while pursuing some of the world’s most demanding climbs.

ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – June 08, 2026: HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (R), receives Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi (C) and her mother HE Dr Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Former Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC) (L), during a barza.

Her latest expedition is being undertaken under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, highlighting the significance of her achievements on both a national and international stage.

Looking ahead, Fatima has no intention of slowing down. Her long-term ambition is to complete the Seven Summits, break regional records and ultimately attempt one of mountaineering’s greatest challenges: summiting Mount Everest and neighbouring Lhotse within 24 hours. For one of the UAE’s most inspiring young adventurers, the summit is only the beginning.
