421 Arts Campus Unveils Human in the Loop, Exploring Humanity and Technology

421 Arts Campus presents Human in the Loop, on view from 21 June to 13 September 2026, a new immersive installation by Emirati artist and robotics engineer Dr. Ahmad Al Attar. Developed through the 2024 cycle of 421’s Artistic Development Program (ADP), the exhibition marks AlAttar’s first institutional solo exhibition and his most ambitious work to date.

Exploring the growing relationship between humans and technology, Human in the Loop invites visitors to consider how algorithmic systems shape behaviour, attention, and decision-making. Through sound, participation, and play, the installation examines the subtle ways technology influences everyday life, encouraging audiences to reflect on their role within increasingly complex digital systems.

Trained as a mechatronics engineer and robotics researcher, Dr. AlAttar brings together his expertise in robotics with his artistic practice, creating an experience that is both playful and conceptually driven. As the artist explains, the installation began with a simple question: “Who is really in control?” Rather than answering directly, the work invites visitors to discover the question through interaction.

The installation transforms the gallery into an interactive landscape of suspended colourful ropes, each activated by touch. Every pull generates sound, beginning with natural soundscapes before gradually shifting towards electronic tones. As visitors move through the space, they realise they are participating in a game of hide-and-seek with an algorithm that continually changes location. Finding the “correct” rope triggers a heightened auditory response before the system resets and the search begins again.

The exhibition is the culmination of Dr. AlAttar’s participation in the 2024 Artistic Development Program, where he developed the project with facilitator Jolaine Frizzell and mentors Khalid AlAwadhi, Founder and CEO of Remal, and Dr. Pradeep Sharma, Director of the Arts, Culture and Heritage Program at the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation.

According to Faisal Al Hassan, Director of 421 Arts Campus, the exhibition reflects the institution’s commitment to supporting artists as they expand their practices through experimentation, mentorship, and ambitious new commissions.

Referencing a robotics and artificial intelligence term describing systems that rely on human input, Human in the Looptransforms a technical concept into an immersive sensory experience, positioning visitors not as observers but as active participants whose actions continually shape the work itself.
