In today’s world of luxury travel, meaningful experiences are becoming just as important as beautiful destinations. At THE OZEN COLLECTION‘s award-winning OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, the Adopt a Coral Frame initiative gives guests the opportunity to contribute directly to the restoration of the Maldives’ vibrant coral reefs. 

Launched in November 2024, the programme allows visitors to take part in restoring the resort’s coral reefs by sponsoring and planting coral fragments that will become part of a growing underwater ecosystem. Designed to combine conservation with meaningful guest experiences, the initiative has already seen 41 coral frames installed, with new additions carefully limited each month to ensure every fragment receives the attention needed to thrive.

The experience is led by the resort’s in-house marine biologist, Nuria Camps Suarez, who introduces guests to coral biology, reef restoration and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. Beginning at HUDHU BAY, participants prepare a metal frame holding around 38 healthy coral fragments before it is transferred into the water.

Confident swimmers can accompany the marine team to place their coral frame directly onto the reef, while those who prefer to stay on shore can still take part by sponsoring a frame that is planted on their behalf.

The initiative has become especially popular with families, giving children a hands-on introduction to marine conservation while supporting school sustainability projects. Guests also receive underwater photographs of their coral frame and bi-annual updates, allowing them to follow its progress long after returning home.

Beyond creating memorable experiences, the programme is already delivering measurable environmental benefits. Reef fish have begun inhabiting the restored coral, while turtles, stingrays and reef sharks are frequent visitors. Following the 2024 global coral bleaching event, restoration has also expanded into deeper, cooler waters to provide more stable conditions for long-term reef recovery.
