Abdulla Lutfi sees the world differently – and that’s what makes his art quite
so compelling. An autistic Emirati artist known for his intricate black-and-white line drawings, Lutfi’s body of work offers a unique lens on everyday life in the UAE.
From bustling souks and airport terminals to food delivery bikes and even skyscrapers mid-construction, he captures the unique energy of his home country with humour, precision, and heart.
“I’m told by my mother that I was non-verbal for many years,” the artist-savant explains to Villa 88 Man. “I communicated through my drawings. So, ever since I can remember, I have been dabbling in art.”
What began as a personal form of expression has evolved into a nationally celebrated career. Lutfi’s intricate illustrations have adorned everything from airport walls in Dubai and Abu Dhabi to buses, billboards, and the packaging of thousands of Noon deliveries.
He has also collaborated with high-profile brands including AllSaints and Converse, and his art has graced the cover of Emirates Airlines’ in-flight magazine.

But, despite the growing acclaim, Lutfi’s approach remains deeply personal. “Many people think I doodle,” he says. “But that’s not my style. I do detailed line drawings. I try to communicate the UAE as I see it.”
That outlook is key to his identity as both an artist and a person.
“My country still feels so new, and every day, something pops up which is amazing. When I’m out and about, I’m fascinated with the scenes I see,” Lutfi elaborates. “My autism helps me to see things clearly and very differently. Everything I see gets imprinted in my brain, and I can then reproduce it at anytime.”
While the artist originally started his creative journey with colourful paintings, a pivotal moment came when he first experimented with a black permanent marker on canvas.
“My mentor encouraged me to carry on, and before I knew it, I had my first solo exhibition – and it was a sell-out,” Lutfi recalls. “After that, there was no going back. Black-and-white became my style, and I then started being recognised as a black-and-white artist.”

While his work is full of clarity and control, his journey unfolded against a backdrop of societal assumptions, especially around autism. For many, a diagnosis on the spectrum might seem like a barrier to success. But for Lutfi, it became the foundation of his artistic identity. “At first, I didn’t understand autism,” he says. “But once I found out what it really is, and how it actually
helps me be the man I am today, I realised I like who I am and wouldn’t want to change anything. Autism completes me.”
Still, navigating the art world came with hurdles. “Initially, when I went solo, it was hard to establish myself,” he reveals. “I was getting commissioned because of my autism – society couldn’t see beyond my disability. But now I’m approached because of my abilities as an artist.”
That shift in perception has been among his proudest achievements, along with the chance to represent his country and culture through art.

Lutfi’s future ambitions are as bold as his line work. “I’d love to have a million followers,” he says. “I’d love to see my art on the Burj Khalifa, on an Emirates aircraft, and on the Etihad Rail.”
Given his growing profile, from international exhibitions to branded collaborations and national commissions, those goals certainly feel achievable.
A self-taught artist, Lutfi draws inspiration from creative icons who defied convention, name-checking Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, and Alberto Giacometti. Although their styles don’t overlap with his, their spirit of determination and expression speaks to him.
The Emirati’s own advice to aspiring artists, especially those on the autism spectrum, is simple but powerful. “Do art every day. Dabble in different forms. Don’t give up if some people don’t like your work. Do what you love, not what the world loves,” says Lutfi.
“I hope people can see what I see through my drawings – a glimpse of autism as well – and understand that people on the spectrum are no less than others.”
