Muria: Jewellery as Cultural Memory

Born from a dialogue between memory and movement, Muria is a jewellery house that approaches adornment as narrative. As the founders describe it, “Muria is a traveling journey… an alchemist of experiences… gathering wisdom, symbols of transformation, and echoes of cultures inherited through generations.” This idea of constant motion, of collecting and reinterpreting cultural fragments, sits at the heart of its identity.

Founded by Omani sisters Fatma and Maryam AlBarram, Muria is rooted in a deeply personal pursuit. The duo began by tracing the lost histories embedded within their own heritage, translating those discoveries into pieces that feel both intimate and expansive. Their approach is guided by the belief that jewellery can carry meaning beyond ornament. As they note, each creation is conceived as a way of “telling the story of their ancestors through jewellery.”

This narrative instinct is reinforced by a design philosophy that prioritises research and immersion. Every piece begins with travel, observation, and the gathering of symbols across geographies. These references are distilled into modern forms that retain the emotional weight of their origins. The result is jewellery that feels considered without being literal, where heritage is not preserved as relic but reimagined as something living.

Muria’s distinctiveness lies in this balance between reverence and reinvention. The brand draws from a wide cultural axis spanning the Gulf, India, and Africa, echoing centuries of exchange shaped by trade, migration, and storytelling. Its collections reflect this intersection.

Sacred Geometry explores the visual language of ancient forms, translating them into pieces that are graphic and contemporary. Al Jawhara turns to heirloom traditions, framing gemstones and protective amulets as symbols of continuity between generations. Vintage Mahra channels regional amulets through stones such as onyx and malachite, while Mishawak reinterprets spike jewellery from the Arabian Peninsula with a sharper, more modern edge. Qamariya, inspired by Yemeni stained glass windows, introduces colour through sapphires and diamonds, capturing light in motion.

Underlying each collection is a consistent thread of transformation. Muria treats jewellery as a medium that evolves alongside its wearer, carrying personal meaning. Its mission reflects this intention, aiming to create pieces that “transform cultural heritage into modern expressions of beauty” while fostering connection through artistry.

Now housed at Amiri Gems in Muscat, Muria occupies a space that mirrors its ethos, where craftsmanship meets cultural storytelling. It is not simply about adornment, but about continuity. Jewellery here becomes a vessel for histories that are carried forward, reframed, and worn into the present.
