Wallpaper is Back but Would You Try it in Your Home?

For years, wallpaper carried unfortunate associations with dated florals, difficult removal and the sort of spare room nobody had redecorated since 1987. In 2026, however, it has returned with a far more sophisticated outlook.

Today, wallpaper is more than simply a decorative backdrop. Designers use it to shape a room’s atmosphere and identity, introducing depth, movement, and narrative in ways paint alone cannot always achieve. From softly rippled surfaces to enveloping botanical prints, the latest designs offer plenty of reasons to reconsider the roll.

Jewel Tones

For those prepared to embrace a little opulence, gold, emerald, sapphire and deep burgundy are bringing richness back to interiors. These colours lend themselves beautifully to powder rooms, home bars and smaller spaces, where drama can be encouraged. A guest bathroom, after all, has very little opportunity to become overwhelming.

Pattern, Everywhere

Then there is pattern-drenching, the most confident expression of wallpaper’s revival. Instead of stopping at a single feature wall, one print is carried across an entire room and, occasionally, onto the ceiling. It can transform bedrooms, dressing rooms and creative spaces into immersive environments.

A Return to Tradition

Classic motifs are also being revisited, although the results feel more considered than nostalgic. Damasks, intricate florals and decorative repeats are appearing in contemporary colour palettes and more generous proportions. Used in a dining room or lounge, they introduce timeless elegance without making the space resemble a period drama, unless that is precisely the intention.

Moiré Movement

Recognised by its gently undulating lines, moiré wallpaper brings a sense of movement to a space without being overpowering. Its subtle wave-like patterns work particularly well in formal living rooms, entrance halls and behind a statement piece of furniture.

Walls That Tell a Story

Some of the season’s most compelling wallpapers have an almost narrative quality. Panoramic landscapes, architectural scenes and imaginative illustrations turn a wall into something to explore rather than simply look at. They are especially effective in bedrooms, studies and intimate seating areas, where the imagery can establish a distinct mood.

Bringing the Outside In

Botanical patterns have never entirely disappeared, but their latest interpretation feels earthier and more atmospheric. Leaves, branches, and abstract natural forms appear in muted greens, clay tones, and mineral shades. The effect is calming rather than overtly tropical, making these wallpapers ideal for living spaces designed for unwinding.
