Princess Lalla Hasna of Morocco was spotted wearing the rare Aga Khan emerald in Azerbaijan

While in Azerbaijan, HRH Princess Lalla Hasna — President of the Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat — turned heads in the exquisite Aga Khan Emerald, a legendary gem and one of the rarest fashion treasures on the planet.

On Tuesday, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasna joined Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, for the opening of “The Art of Rabat Carpet” digital exhibition. The Moroccan Princess captivated onlookers in a richly embroidered jacket by Moroccan designer Fadila El Gadi — a striking tribute to the country’s masterful artisanship. She paired the piece with sleek black trousers and completed the look with the exquisite Aga Khan Emerald brooch.

The brooch was a thrilling surprise, making its first public appearance in over 55 years. Originally commissioned by Prince Aga Khan from Cartier Paris in 1960 for his bride, Nina Dyer, the piece is a masterwork of mid-century jewellery. At its heart lies a striking 37-carat square-cut emerald, framed by 20 marquise-shaped diamonds totalling approximately 12.04 carats.

In 1969, this extraordinary jewel was auctioned at Christie’s and passed through the hands of both Van Cleef & Arpels and Harry Winston. After decades out of the spotlight, it resurfaced at the auction house in 2024, and now, it appears to have found a dazzling new chapter in another royal collection.

A look into Princess Lalla Hasna’s elegant style in Azerbaijan

Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasna, the sister of His Majesty the King of Morocco, began her visit to Azerbaijan on 4 May with a graceful appearance at the International Carpet Festival, where she was honoured as the guest of honour. The Princess embraced understated elegance in a tailored dark blue suit by Armani, perfectly paired with a sleek clutch from the Tunisian brand Alaïa and diamond earrings by Van Cleef & Arpels.

Later that same day, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasna paid her respects at Baku’s Alley of Honour, laying a wreath at the tomb of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. Following the solemn tribute, the Princess held a meeting with First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. For the occasion, Her Royal Highness maintained her polished, formal aesthetic, donning a sophisticated ensemble by Dolce & Gabbana and once again choosing a chic Alaïa bag to complete the look.

On Tuesday, 6 May, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasna visited the International Mugham Centre in Baku — an emblematic cultural institution devoted to preserving and promoting Mugham, the ancestral musical tradition recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Embracing the spirit of the occasion, the Princess chose a regal Moroccan caftan in royal blue, paired with striking diamond earrings.

HRH Princess Lalla Hasna looked effortlessly elegant in Giorgio Armani as she visited the “Educational Complex 132–134” secondary school in Baku on Wednesday, as part of the educational twinning project linking schools in Rabat and the Azerbaijani capital. The Princess completed the refined ensemble with classic pearl earrings
