    FIVE MINUTES WITH…Noura Al-Serkal

We catch up with the artist and founder of UAE-based jewellery brand TURABI.

    Noura Al-Serkal

What first inspired you to pursue jewellery and design as a creative career?

I have wanted to become an artist since I won a drawing competition at age nine. That gave me the drive to always pursue my passion for making and creating. When it comes to jewellery, I launched my first accessory business in 2012, inspired by a studded bracelet I used to make at home.

How would you describe the philosophy behind TURABI?

TURABI was born out of the need to create something different. I felt the world of jewellery was too perfect, too idealistic, and what makes us as humans beautiful is how unique we all are.

What’s your biggest achievement so far?

As an artist, exhibiting my artworks internationally in Riyadh, Bahrain, and Paris has been a huge achievement. As for TURABI, having my four-year-old jewellery business recognised as a finalist for the Fashion Trust Arabia Award in 2024 was a major milestone.

What inspires you most when beginning a new collection or project?

The world inspires me. It is not one single thing – it is a repetition of thoughts and feelings that I want to experience through the pieces I create. It usually starts with a thought, then I try to experiment with that thought through making and reworking the idea until I feel the piece has reached its full potential.

What are you currently working on?

I balance my time between being an artist and a jewellery designer. I am currently working on a new solo exhibition with Tashkeel, so all of my focus is currently on completing the artworks for it at the end of this year Congratulations on receiving the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) Jewellery Design Award.

How did that opportunity help shape your creative journey?

It was a huge milestone. When I received the award, I had just completed my Master’s in Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art, and the fund provided me with a wonderful introduction to L’ÉCOLE School of Jewellery Arts in Paris. Fast forward to 2026, and I am now a lecturer at L’ÉCOLE Middle East. It is a huge honour to be the first Emirati jewellery lecturer and savoir faire lecturer in the school.

How important is the role of organisations like ADMAF in supporting the next generation of designers and artists in the UAE?

It is vital for a healthy creative ecosystem. ADMAF has been part of my journey since 2014, and I am truly
grateful for how they have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and passion.

What do you hope people feel when they experience or wear one of your creations?

To feel unique and different. I hope they appreciate the uncanny, the unusual, and the curious.

    What’s next for TURABI?

My vision for TURABI still has a long way to go. I hope that one day it will become an international jewellery brand for unique individuals.
