Schiaparelli’s Haute Couture 2025 show once again proved Daniel Roseberry’s prowess for sartorial storytelling.
Named Back to the Future, the collection draws inspiration from when Elsa Schiaparelli had to leave Paris in the summer of 1940 to head to New York to escape the Nazi invasion. Daniel used this tension and uncertainty to create drama in his clothes.
“Conceived entirely in black-and-white, I wanted the collection to ask whether we can blur the line between past and future,” explains Daniel of his stripped-back colour palette.
Attempting to create a dialogue between what has gone before and what is yet to come, the designer pondered, “If I focused obsessively on the past, could I actually make a collection that looks as if it was born in the future?” The structure of the garments harked back to the popular hourglass silhouettes of the 1940s with cinched waists and corset ties.
Though always surreal, Back to the Future was certainly Daniel’s most futuristic collection to date. He concludes, “This collection reminds you that looking backwards is nothing if we can’t find something meaningful to bring into our future.”
