Visionary Emirati artist Latifa Saeed’s work bridges tradition and innovation, drawing deeply from the cultural and material essence of the UAE. Through her installations, sculptures, and designs, she transforms regional materials into profound narratives, exploring themes of identity, society, and the environment. Her art invites audiences to traverse the boundaries between the urban and natural, connecting the city to the desert and beyond to the stars.

A graduate of Zayed University and an alumna of the prestigious Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artist Fellowship, Latifa has consistently redefined artistic boundaries. Her work is not just art – it’s a dialogue, inspiring others to see the beauty in the interplay of tradition and contemporary expression.

What is your passion in life and how did you find it?

I am driven by a deep-rooted passion for creativity, which has always provided me with a strong sense of purpose and fulfilment. My innate curiosity, combined with my commitment to innovation, has led me to explore diverse avenues within the arts. 

This journey has allowed me to embrace new experiences, engage in meaningful research, and foster collaborative partnerships. Through creativity, I’ve discovered the power of balanced, harmonious exploration – fuelling my growth and adding value to my work and the teams I work with.

How has being an Emirati shaped your worldview?

In the United Arab Emirates, we are part of a peaceful, transformative, nurturing environment enriched by diverse narratives. Our nation is both inclusive and forward-looking, embracing diversity while being deeply grounded in heritage, and culture. This balance fosters a dynamic culture of unity, resilience, and growth.

We are now witnessing a flourishing art and cultural scene, a new renaissance, a powerful reflection of our nation’s vitality and cultural richness. 

This thriving movement stands as a testament to creativity, intellect, and the vibrancy of our society, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to fostering an inspiring environment for artistic and cultural growth.

Art is a powerful indicator of a nation’s dynamism and its commitment to fostering diverse forms of creativity, paving the way toward the future, while building a legacy that captures the spirit of our present. Living in such a globally connected country has deepened my appreciation for international collaboration and highlighted the positive impact of bridging cultures to drive shared growth and understanding.

How did the UAE empower you to get where you are today?

The UAE has empowered me profoundly by providing a supportive environment for growth, education, and opportunity. Growing up here, I have benefited from world-class infrastructure and educational systems that cultivate ambition and innovation. 

The UAE’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurs and professionals, alongside its emphasis on leadership and excellence, has inspired me to set high aspirations and confidently pursue my goals. The nation’s vision for progress, coupled with its openness to global perspectives, has taught me the value of adaptability and resilience, laying a strong foundation that has been instrumental in shaping
 my journey.

As a female leader in your field, how are you paying it forward to the next generation?

I am committed to paying it forward by fostering opportunities and actively mentoring young men and women of the next generation. Our leaders have taught us to lead by example, and I actively encourage young women and men alike to pursue their ambitions to help them navigate challenges and build confidence in their abilities. 

I believe in showing that success is possible while staying true to one’s values. By fostering networks, hosting workshops, and promoting professional development, I hope to inspire and empower the next generation to pursue their goals boldly.

Through my Art Majlis, I create a platform that not only showcases emerging talent but also encourages collaboration and dialogue among artists, creative minds, intellectuals and leaders in their field. 

This initiative allows me to nurture creativity and innovation, providing a space for young artists to express themselves and learn from one another. I advocate for support systems, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to fostering talent and leadership across all sectors. By empowering emerging leaders to embrace both heritage and forward-thinking, I hope to contribute to a lasting legacy of ambition, inclusivity, and excellence that will continue to shape our society.

What do you wish you’d known earlier on in life when it comes to your chosen career?

I don’t generally like to look back – my vision is always focused on creating a better future. I believe that
each day presents its own challenges and opportunities for growth. 

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my mentors, whose guidance and support have been invaluable on my journey. Without their encouragement and wisdom, I would not be on the path I am today. Their belief in my potential has been a driving force, and I am committed to paying that support forward by mentoring the next generation. 

What’s the next challenge you’re looking forward to taking on?

I have been dreaming about a post-contemporary Arab art movement, one that focuses on the ‘Future’ and embraces the complexities of our rapidly evolving world. This movement would not only celebrate the rich heritage and cultural narratives of the Arab world but also explore innovative forms of expression that reflect the current times.

As a proud Emirati, how do you wish to represent your culture to the wider world?

We’re living in times of incredible prosperity and growth, and I believe it’s the duty of an artist to reflect on the present moment. Fifty years ago, we lived in a country that was largely desert. Today, my work and actions have reached global platforms, contributing to a broader narrative that speaks to both our present and future.

As artists, we have the power to highlight the transformative journey of the UAE, from its humble beginnings to its remarkable achievements. I strive to build bridges of creativity between nations, fostering collaboration, and creating shared understanding. I am proud to represent everything that is Emirati, reflecting our rich heritage, dynamic present, and ambitious future.
