Queen Rania of Jordan and her daughter-in-law, Princess Rajwa, made an appearance yesterday at His Majesty King Abdullah II’s Speech from the Throne, marking the opening of the 20th Parliament’s third ordinary session. They were joined by several princes and princesses of the Hashemite Royal Family.
The queen and her daughter-in-law made a fashionable pair as they arrived at Parliament for His Majesty’s Speech from the Throne. Queen Rania opted for a traditional Jordanian velvet thoub in deep purple, while Princess Rajwa stepped out in a floral-print midi dress by Temperley London, paired with a matching Saint Laurent bag and suede pumps by Gianvito Rossi.

Why Did Queen Rania Choose a Traditional Dress for Jordan’s Parliament Opening?
For the opening of Parliament’s session, Queen Rania opted for a traditional look that carried a message far beyond fashion. A custom look by local brand Funtazza Designs celebrated the heritage and culture of the Karak region. Known as Al-Madraqa, the Queen wore a modern interpretation of the traditional design, featuring a striking purple background instead of the traditional black.

This particular look gained attention on social media. Sometimes, an outfit can speak louder than words, and that was certainly the case with Queen Rania’s thoughtful choice of outfit yesterday. It went viral not simply because of its cultural significance, but because it carried a message that went far beyond fashion. It was a gesture of solidarity and a tribute to the people of Hammoud village in Karak, who lost their lives in a vicious attack on their church less than two weeks ago, leaving nine people dead and dozens injured. For many, it was more than a fashion statement.
