Two of Princess Diana’s Iconic Dresses Are Set to Be Auctioned This December

Princess Diana, the People’s Princess and enduring style icon, is once again making headlines in the world of fashion. Two of her most iconic looks, worn in 1994 and 1995, are set to be auctioned this December at two separate auctions, taking place in two international cities: New York and Abu Dhabi.

This is the first time these dresses have been up for sale since June 1997, when Princess Diana donated 79 of her dresses to benefit cancer and AIDS charities, just two months before her sudden death.

Princess Diana’s Iconic Catherine Walker Gown Set to Be Auctioned in Abu Dhabi

Princess Diana’s midnight-blue Catherine Walker gown, which she wore to the 1995 CFDA Fashion Awards, is heading to auction once again, with Julien’s Auctions set to debut it in Abu Dhabi this December.

On January 30, 1995, Princess Diana made an iconic appearance at the 14th Annual Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards in New York, wearing one of the looks now widely associated with her so-called “revenge era.”

For the occasion, Princess Diana turned to her close friend and longtime fashion collaborator, Catherine Walker, wearing a sleek midnight-blue silk-crepe column gown. She styled her look with the Queen Mother’s sapphire brooch, which she styled as a pearl choker.

Princess Diana debuted a bold, slicked-back “wet-look” hairstyle, a fashion-forward choice that quickly became one of the evening’s most talked-about details.

Julien’s Auctions is set to auction the dress alongside other pieces from Princess Diana’s iconic wardrobe, with the Catherine Walker gown taking centre stage as one of the collection’s standout pieces.

Diana’s “Revenge Dress” Comes to New York

Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress” is going up for auction for the first time in 30 years. One of the late princess’s most iconic looks, the legendary black Christina Stambolian dress is set to be auctioned in New York this December, following an international tour.

The black silk Christina Stambolian design, worn by Princess Diana to a Vanity Fair Gala at London’s Serpentine Gallery in June 1994, will be offered at Sotheby’s standalone fashion evening auction in New York on December 9.

Before hitting the auction block on Dec. 9, Diana’s “revenge dress” will go on a global exhibition tour. The first public appearance will be at Sotheby’s London during London Fashion Week, from Sept. 18 to Sept. 24. The dress will then go to Hong Kong in October and Geneva in November, before travelling to New York City, where it will be on public view at Sotheby’s Breuer Building in early December, before the auction
