As Mauzan unveils its 2026 Ramadan collection, we speak with its founder about three decades of craftsmanship, evolution, and finding balance between heritage and contemporary design.
Since 1990, homegrown fashion brand Mauzan has grown into a defining name in the UAE’s fashion landscape. Born from the visionary artistry of Rafia Helal Bin Drai, the brand’s designs sit between heritage and modernity, transforming the Abaya and Sheila into modern silhouettes. “My passion for design was born from a deep respect for tradition and a belief in the power of modern expression,” says Bin Drai. “I was inspired by the abaya, not only as a symbol of heritage, but as a canvas for innovation and individuality. Mauzan began with the intention of honouring our cultural roots while gently reshaping perceptions of Arab fashion, creating pieces that empower women to move through the world with confidence, grace and a strong sense of self.”

That intention is woven into every Mauzan collection. Each piece tells a story of luxury, merging contemporary design with exquisite craftsmanship. Made to celebrate individuality while offering unparalleled comfort and sophistication. “Mauzan’s journey has been one of thoughtful evolution. While our core values, design ethos, and commitment to craftsmanship have remained unwavering, we have continually adapted to the evolving needs of the modern woman.’ Explains Bin Drai. “Each collection reflects a deeper understanding shaped by time, experience and ever-changing global influences. Rather than following trends, we interpret them through the Mauzan lens, ensuring every design feels both contemporary and enduring.”
This measured evolution mirrors the broader fashion landscape in the Emirates. When Mauzan was founded, the local industry was in its infancy. Today, it commands international attention. “The UAE fashion industry has transformed into a globally relevant landscape,” she notes. “What is most inspiring is witnessing how each designer and brand brings a fresh perspective to regional fashion, continuously redefining its narrative. Our industry has confidently moved beyond borders, earning its place on the international stage while still honouring its cultural identity.”
At Mauzan, that balance is achieved through careful design decisions. “Our silhouettes are rooted in tradition, yet each piece is thoughtfully elevated through a contemporary lens,” Bin Drai explains. “From our considered use of colour and innovative fabrics to intricately designed embellishments, every element is chosen to evoke a sense of modernity that resonates with women today. Signature details, such as sculptural hoods and defined belts, have played a transformative role in this evolution, adding structure and versatility to classic forms. It is this blend between heritage and forward-thinking design that allows us to create pieces that feel both timeless and relevant.”

The brand’s latest offering, Chapter 37, arrives with a refined clarity of purpose. Conceived for Spring Summer ’26 and designed to transition seamlessly into Ramadan. “Chapter 37 is inspired by the idea of ‘Ease, Edited’, refining wardrobe essentials to reflect modern sophistication through simplicity and balance. The collection expresses calm luxury through fluid silhouettes, airy textures and thoughtful craftsmanship. It speaks to the modern woman who values versatility, comfort and understated elegance, offering pieces that feel effortless yet polished for every moment of her day.”
Ramadan remains a deeply significant moment in Mauzan’s calendar. “Designing for Ramadan is always a deeply intentional process for us,” she says. “Creatively, we focus on pieces that embody quiet elegance; refined silhouettes, graceful movement and subtle detailing that are ideal for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations. There is a softness to the designs, balanced with a sense of occasion. Emotionally, Ramadan is a time of reflection, connection and generosity, and we aim to capture that spirit in every collection. We approach it with sensitivity and respect, creating garments that allow women to feel both comfortable and elevated.”
Chapter 37 also features a selection of Mommy & Me kaftans, celebrating the importance of family at this time. “The idea is inspired by generational bonds and the beauty of shared traditions between mother and daughter. These complementary pieces are designed to create meaningful moments, blending elegance with emotion.”
As Mauzan continues to grow, its founder remains anchored in authenticity. “I see Mauzan continuing to evolve with intention. Refining our aesthetic while remaining grounded in the craftsmanship and elegance that have always defined us. Above all, I want Mauzan to grow organically, reaching more women globally while staying true to the spirit, authenticity and quiet sophistication at our core.”
And as for the woman behind the label, her creativity and passion continue to drive the brand. “As a woman, I am guided by both heritage and possibility. I believe in honouring where we come from while remaining open to growth and change. Much of my inspiration comes from the strength and resilience of women – their ability to evolve, nurture and lead with quiet determination. Creativity, for me, is rooted in purpose; it is about opening doors, challenging convention and leaving a meaningful path for the next generation to follow, all while staying true to who you are.
